Aquela sobre o Personal Statement

Está sendo muito difícil manter o blog atualizado, mas prometo que vai melhorar quando eu finalmente chegar em Birmingham! :D

Dando continuidade aos posts úteis, hoje vou falar um pouquinho sobre o personal statement.

Quando você já está na fase de escolher suas três universidades de preferência, é necessário ter o PS já pronto, pois um dos campos de preenchimento é justamente para ele.

 O PS é basicamente uma carta em que você tem que falar bem de si mesmo. Faz parte do processo seletivo das universidades estrangeiras e conta muitos pontos nesse processo. Então é bom dedicar um tempinho para esse texto, que no fim serve até como reflexão de tudo que você já alcançou até agora.

 No início parece ser impossível atingir 4000 caracteres falando só de você, mas depois que você começa, 4000 parece até pouco.

Antes de começar a escrever, fiz uma listinha de coisas importantes para mencionar, e isso foi extremamente importante para que eu conseguisse dividir o texto em uma ordem cronológica e pudesse falar sobre cada assunto de forma direta e clara.

Na lista tinha tópicos como:

•  O motivo de eu ter escolhido cursar engenharia química;
•  O processo de seleção para entrar na faculdade;
•  Se meu curso e minha faculdade atingiam minhas expectativas em relação ao meu futuro profissional;
• Coisas relevantes que eu fiz dentro da faculdade (iniciação científica, cursos, palestras,...);
•  Trabalhos fora da faculdade que agregassem (no meu caso eu faço parte de um pré-vestibular comunitário);
• Por que eu tinha escolhido a Inglaterra como país de destino.

Lembre-se que o seu PS é enviado para as três faculdades de uma vez só, então não é bom declarar preferência por uma delas.

Se você pensar de forma organizada, vai ver que de fato consegue levantar sua moral com 4000 caracteres. Porém, tem certas coisinhas importantes para lembrar antes de finalizar seu PS:

          

1.      A contagem de 4000 caracteres inclui os espaços;
2.      4000 caracteres não é o único limite do texto, é 45 linhas OU 4000 caracteres, o que acontecer primeiro.
3.      A formatação do portal é diferente da do Word, então o seu texto bonitinho pode ficar todo esquisito.

Nesse site você pode simular seu PS e ter ele exatamente na forma que vai ficar quando você enviar. Ele te diz a quantidade de linhas e caracteres e você ainda pode ver se tem palavras muito repetidas ou escritas de forma errada, então é uma grande ajuda. Além disso, vocês podem sempre recorrer ao bom e velho google com vários exemplos de PS. 

Eu escrevi e reescrevi o meu PS várias vezes antes de ter ele da forma que eu queria e dentro da formatação necessária. Tive que retirar muuuuita coisa, mas no fim eu fiquei satisfeita.

Ficou assim:

"Engineering has always seemed extremely appealing to me ever since I was young. The idea of working in an industrial plant, managing projects and developing new products has always seemed really interesting to me. Due to my parents’ awareness of the importance to meet other cultures, I have always been encouraged to learn other languages in order to enhance my knowledge. This is why I have studied English for ten years. In 2010 I also started taking French lessons and I have been studying it since then. When deciding which course I would apply to, chemical engineering was the path I wanted to follow, mainly because of the broad range of career possibilities, such as environment and petrochemical, areas that have huge importance nowadays. I would have the necessary tools to work with those subjects and the opportunity to make a difference. I was accepted in all the universities I had applied to, including one of the three most renowned engineering universities in Brazil, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the one I have chosen. Inside the university, I have realized that the range of possibilities to a chemical engineer was much wider than I had thought. Since the beginning of my course, my goal has been to take advantage of as many things as the university could offer me. This is why I have always tried to learn the subjects in depth, maintain good grades, as well as search for extracurricular activities in which I could enhance my knowledge and put it into practice. Taking that on board, in the end of 2011, I started in a scientific initiation in the area of catalysis. It was a great experience because I was able to work in a laboratory making thermodynamics measures of reactions with a catalyst used in the petrochemical industry. I have spent a whole year in this project, until it was finished. After that, I was invited to work in a different laboratory developing a project with polymers that could be used to prevent obstruction in the extraction of petroleum. I am still working on that project and it has been wonderful to be in touch with that kind of research, especially because of its importance. There are other areas which I am very interested in studying, starting with cosmetics, environment and management. It seems interesting to me to connect those areas, given that the cosmetics industry only gets bigger nowadays and that it is crucial to develop ways to decrease the environmental impacts. Furthermore, a great project I was aware on account of my university was the chance to take part into a voluntary work. It is a course that give lessons to adolescents that do not have enough money to have access to good schools in order to help them getting into college. I work as a Chemistry teacher for almost a year and it has helped me develop my skills to express myself orally and increase my confidence to keep focused when I am speaking in front of people, characteristics I believe that are very important for a professional. In addition, I can get in touch with people that really need help in many different ways. It is certainly a way to practice a good action that can make some difference in the world. I am certain that the program “Science Without Borders” is other amazing opportunity that my university offers to me. An exchange program is without a doubt an incomparable way to enhance my curriculum and develop my personality, giving me independence and maturity to adapt in a different country with a different culture. My experience living by myself would certainly help me with the process of adaptation. Also, I truly believe that it is a chance to have a different view over the subjects and an opportunity to make a better professional. Moreover, the idea of living in a country such as the United Kingdom seems a unique experience to me in every way, whether educational, social or cultural. I would be given the chance to continue my degree and raise me knowledge in a renowned British University."
